Three Things You Should Know About Praying the Rosary

The Holy Rosary is one of the best devotions any Catholic can pray to strengthen their Faith, venerate our most Blessed Virgin Mary, and lead us into contemplative meditation reflecting on the mysteries of the Lord’s earthly life. While almost every Catholic knows how to pray a Rosary, here are three interesting facts you should know before you pray your next Rosary.

1. It’s Mary’s Favorite Prayer

The Most Holy Rosary involves the Hail Mary, the favorite prayer of Our Lady. In fact, according to Dominican tradition, the Rosary was given to us by Mary herself! In 1206, Saint Dominic was in France and was having little success converting Cathars back to the Church. The Virgin Mary appeared to him in a vision and gave him the Rosary as a spiritual weapon to spread the Faith.

2. Mary Want Us to Pray the Rosary

In 1917, Our Lady appeared six times in Fatima, Portugal, culminating in the amazing Miracle of the Sun. She revealed her identity to us, and each time she appeared she insisted on praying the Rosary.

“Pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace in the world . . . for she alone can save it" — Our Lady of Fatima, July 13, 1917.

3. Thank Your Guardian Angel

Having a hard time falling asleep at night? Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI recommends praying the Rosary.

“I would recommend the Rosary. That is a form of prayer that, besides its spiritual meaning, has the power to calm the inner self. If we hold fast here to the actual words, then we are gradually freed from the thoughts that so torment us.”

However, don’t fret if you fall asleep mid prayer. A pious Catholic legend says if you don’t finish praying the Rosary, your guardian angel will finish it for you.
