Four Marian Symbols
The Ladybug
Legend has it that seven spots on a ladybug represent Our Lady’s Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys. The ladybug is also known as anima della Madona, or soul of Our Lady.
The Cedar Tree
In the Bible, the cedar tree is mentioned 72 times. Some references refer to the cedar tree as being planted by God, graceful, beautiful, strong and fragrant. All of those words could also be used to describe the Blessed Mother, which is perhaps why the cedar tree has been symbolic of Mary since the Middle Ages.
The Color Blue
In the book of Numbers, the people of Israel were instructed to wear a cord of blue. As a result, this color came to represent submitting to the will of the Father. Mary is our greatest example of that. Mary is also often depicted wearing blue as a sign of royalty and purity, among other things.
The Morning Star
A bright star that is visible in the East just before sunrise reminds us that Mary is the bright star that will light the way for the Son of God.
