For as long as you’ve been a Catholic, you’ve probably known about the Rosary, but have you ever paused to think about how this form of prayer originated? Where did it come from? Did someone invent it?
We can thank St. Dominic of Guzman for spreading the devotion of the Rosary as we know it today. He didn’t invent the Rosary, but he was inspired to create it.
In 1208, St. Dominic was diligently working to combat the heresy that was taking place in the Church at the time. He founded the Order of Preachers (commonly known as the Dominicans) and made it his mission to share the truth of the Gospel with the Albigensian heretics. Despite his incredible zeal and hard work, St. Dominic was not successful in converting the people.
That is until Our Lady appeared to him. She gave him these instructions,
"Wonder not that you have obtained so little fruit by your labors, you have spent them on barren soil, not yet watered with the dew of Divine grace. When God willed to renew the face of the earth, He began by sending down on it the fertilizing rain of the Angelic Salutation. Therefore preach my Psalter composed of 150 Angelic Salutations (Hail Mary) and 15 Our Fathers, and you will obtain an abundant harvest.”
St. Dominic listened carefully to the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He creatively devised a way for people to say the prayers the Queen of Heaven requested, which is what we now know as the Rosary.
St. Dominic began using the Rosary as a tool to preach to all he encountered. Miraculously, the people finally responded to his message as they heard the beautiful story of the life of Jesus come alive in the the Mysteries of the Rosary. Many souls were converted to the faith as a result.
The power of the Rosary did not end with St.Dominic. It continues today because Our Lady promised that ALL who pray the Rosary would experience blessings, miracles and conversion of souls. There is a reason that the Rosary is such a popular devotion for millions of Catholics...it’s effective!
